On January 1, we members of the Catholic Church family celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, Our Lady’s greatest title. This feast is the octave (eighth day) of Christmas. In the modern Roman Calendar only Christmas and Easter enjoy the privilege of an octave celebration. According to the 1962 Missal of St. John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, today is the Solemnity of Circumcision of Our Lord. It is also the Church’s yearly World Day of Peace.
